In order to detect gravitational waves, we will need to make measurements of unprecedented precision. In this talk, I will discuss several aspects of the measurement challenge that could strike a physicist as being nearly impossible to meet. The rest of the talk will be devoted to a brief demonstration of how each of these challenges is being met by the interferometric gravitational wave detectors now nearing completion around the globe.
